Women's Basketball Home Opener Ends in Overtime Thriller Win against Huskies
Barrie, ON -- In a heart-pounding home opener, the Georgian Grizzlies showcased their grit and determination, emerging victorious against the George Brown Huskies with a final score of 94-85 in overtime.
The game kicked off with a slow start for the Grizzlies, who found themselves trailing 15-7 after the first quarter. However, Georgian quickly found their footing, igniting a second-quarter surge that saw them outscore the Huskies 21-14, closing the gap and setting the stage for an intense second half.
The Grizzlies continued to build momentum, posting 20 points in the third quarter while holding George Brown to 16. Despite a resilient effort from the Huskies in the fourth, where they matched Georgian's 16 points, the teams found themselves deadlocked at 78-78, forcing an exhilarating overtime period.
In the extra five minutes, the Grizzlies flipped the script, clamping down on defense and capitalizing on their opportunities. Georgian's defensive tenacity shone through, resulting in 17 steals throughout the game—10 more than the Huskies’ 7. The Grizzlies outscored George Brown 10-1 in overtime, showcasing their poise and perseverance when it mattered most.
Lily Roberts-Neef (St. Thomas, ON) led the charge with a standout performance, finishing with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals, shooting 8-of-19 from the field. Kory Hook (Barrie, ON) also made a significant impact, contributing 14 points, 5 steals, and 4 assists, while shooting an impressive 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and hitting 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.
New recruit Sydney Shawyer (Horseshoe Valley, ON) made a solid debut off the bench, adding 11 points and 8 rebounds, while Ami May (Raymond, AB) chipped in with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
With the victory, the Grizzlies set a positive tone for the season and are now preparing for their next challenge. The team heads to Durham College on Saturday, October 26, looking to build on this thrilling win.
