Georgian Grizzlies Celebrate 2025–26 Varsity Award Winners
The Georgian Grizzlies wrapped up another memorable season at the annual Varsity Awards Banquet, celebrating the student-athletes who defined the 2025–26 year through performance, leadership, and academic excellence.
From record-breaking performances to championship moments, this season showcased the continued growth of Georgian Athletics—both in competition and in the classroom.
Leading the Way
At the top of the night’s honours were two of the most dominant performers across all Grizzlies programs.
Jason Sache (Men’s Basketball) was named Male Athlete of the Year (Cloutier Cup) following an elite all-around season. Sache led the team with 315 total points, shot an outstanding 57.1% from the field, and averaged 8.8 rebounds per game, ranking among the best in the OCAA. He also surpassed 500 career points in just two seasons, playing a major role in leading the Grizzlies to a historic OCAA East Division Championship.
On the women’s side, Sydney Shawyer earned Female Athlete of the Year (Greer Trophy) after delivering one of the most dominant scoring seasons in program history. Shawyer led the OCAA with 19.1 points per game, capturing both the league and East Division scoring titles, while earning First-Team All-Star honours.
Major Award Winners
Leadership and impact extended well beyond the stat sheet.
Ashtyn Smith (Women’s Volleyball) received the Howard/Belcourt Award, recognizing her dedication, leadership, and sportsmanship. Smith also cemented her legacy in Georgian history, becoming the program’s all-time digs leader with 656, while earning OCAA Second-Team All-Star honours.
The McKillican Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to Student Athletics was awarded to Patrick McGahern for his continued support and contributions to Georgian Athletics behind the scenes.
Rookie of the Year honours went to Rob Allen (Men’s Rugby) and Haley Carroll (Women’s Volleyball). Carroll also earned OCAA All-Rookie Team recognition, while Allen made an immediate impact on a competitive rugby squad.
Academic excellence remained a cornerstone of the program, with Ethan Eiselt-Rolfe earning the Male Academic & Athletic Excellence Award, and Bryden Dilley receiving the Female Academic & Athletic Excellence Award following another outstanding season.
Making an Impact Across the OCAA & CCAA
Grizzlies student-athletes made their presence felt across the province and nationally.
In golf, Bryden Dilley led the way with an exceptional season, earning OCAA All-Ontario honours, a CCAA Team Bronze Medal, and the CCAA Exemplary Leadership Award. Ty Turner was also recognized with the OCAA Fair Play Award.
The men’s rugby team saw multiple athletes earn All-Star recognition, including Robert Allen, Parker England, Evan Mino, and Kade Rennie. Rennie delivered one of the most historic moments of the season, scoring a program-record 40 points in a single game, while finishing among the league’s top scorers.
On the court, women’s basketball continued to shine. Alongside Shawyer, Ami May averaged 12.9 points per game while recording 73 assists (2nd in the OCAA) and 41 steals, showcasing her impact on both ends of the floor. Sophia Syal also made her mark with an All-Rookie Team selection.
For men’s basketball, Trey Wilson and Sean Marseille played key roles in a balanced and dangerous lineup, averaging 16.9 PPG and 14.3 PPG respectively.
In volleyball, Josiah Grimm earned Second-Team All-Star honours, while Devon Oliver was named to the All-Rookie Team. On the women’s side, Haley Carroll and Tasha Bakes earned All-Rookie honours, while Ashtyn Smith added to her historic season with another All-Star selection. Head Coach Danielle Tamm was also recognized as OCAA Coach of the Year.
Team Success
This season was defined not just by individual achievements, but by team success and identity.
The men’s basketball team captured the OCAA East Division Championship, marking a major milestone and establishing themselves as one of the top programs in the province.
Meanwhile, the men’s rugby team continued its tradition of excellence, earning an OCAA Bronze Medal while also being named the OCAA’s Best Defensive Team. The Grizzlies allowed just 13.1 points per game, finishing the season with an impressive 375 points scored and only 126 conceded, showcasing dominance on both sides of the ball.
Excellence in the Classroom
Success for the Grizzlies extends far beyond competition.
This year, 38 student-athletes were named to the OCAA Honor Roll, recognizing those who achieved an academic average of 80% or higher while competing at the varsity level.
This achievement reflects the discipline, commitment, and balance required to succeed as a student-athlete, and continues to highlight the strength of Georgian’s academic and athletic culture.
