Hook & Kirk Named Athletes of Year
55th Annual Georgian Grizzlies Varsity Awards
Barrie, ON - The Georgian Grizzlies hosted their 55th annual Varsity Awards celebration and the night served as a celebration of athletic and academic success over the 2024-25 season as athletes competed provincially in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and nationally in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Rielly Kirk of the Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team and Kory Hook of the women’s basketball took home top honours as the Athletes of the Year.
Kirk, a native of Wasaga Beach, won the Cloutier Cup as Georgian’s male athlete of the year. He was named the OCAA Men’s Rugby Player of the Year, OCAA West Division Player of the Year and an OCAA League All-Star. The Interactive Media Design-Web student also received the OCAA Athletic and Academic Excellence Award and the OCAA All-Academic Award.
Hook, picked up the Greer Trophy as Georgian’s female athlete of the year. The third-year guard from Barrie was named an OCAA East Division Second Team All-Team. The Electrical Engineering Technology student was team captain and averaged 11.5 points per game, while shooting 31% from the three-point line and 83% from the free throw line.
Uzziah Glasgow received the Howard/Belcourt Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship, Dedication, Commitment, Attitude and Leadership. Thorup served as the team captain on the men’s volleyball team for the past three years and was named to the OCAA Second All-Star team.
The McKillican Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Georgian Athletic Department went to Georgian student, Dylan Dick for his work with the athletic department as a photographer.
Other major award winners included women’s basketball Sydney Shawyer and men’s volleyball player Aidan Watson, who were named the female and male rookies of the year. Shawyer was named the OCAA and East Division Rookie of the Year, along with being named to the East Division All-Rookie Team. Watson, an OCAA All-Academic Award winner, started in over half of the team’s second semester games and on two occasions led the team in kills, with 13 and 12 respectively.
Men’s golfer Chris Miller won the Male Academic & Athletic Excellence Award after finishing in the top ten at the OCAA Championships and averaging 92% in the Golf Industry Management Program.
Bryden Dilley of the women’s golf was the winner of the Female Academic & Athletic Excellence Award. Dilley averaged 94.6% in the Golf Industry Management Program and won a pair of bronze medals at the OCAA and CCAA Championships.
A total of 29 student-athletes received an OCAA All-Academic Awards for achieving an average of at least 80% or higher while also representing Georgian in their respective sport. In addition, four student-athletes received recognition from the OCAA and CCAA as achieving all-star status and academic success. Rielly Kirk and Jake Boulding from the men’s rugby team were awarded the OCAA Academic and Athletic Excellence Award, while Bryden Dilley of the women’s golf team, Ami May from the women’s basketball team and Ryan Vriezema from the men’s volleyball team were named CCAA Academic All-Canadians.
