Sydney Shawyer, Women's Basketball
Women’s Basketball | Forward | 2nd Year | Horseshoe Valley, Ontario
After earning OCAA Rookie of the Year honours last season, Sydney Shawyer entered her sophomore campaign with high expectations, and she delivered.
The 5’11” forward from Horseshoe Valley, and Eastview Secondary School graduate, was named the OCAA Scoring Champion after leading the conference in points per game. Shawyer averaged 19.1 points per game, ranking 1st in the OCAA, and finished with 229 total points on the season.
Taking on a larger role in Year 2, Shawyer started 10 of 12 games and averaged over 30 minutes per night. Along with her scoring production, she contributed:
-
5.8 rebounds per game
-
1.9 assists per game
-
28 steals
Her ability to create offense, stretch the floor, and attack in key moments made her the focal point of Georgian’s attack all season.
As a team, the Grizzlies finished 7–7, placing 5th in the East and returning to the playoffs. Georgian battled in the opening round before falling to the St. Clair Saints, who will compete for OCAA gold this weekend.
From Rookie of the Year to OCAA Scoring Champion, Shawyer proved her first season was only the foundation. In Year 2, she established herself as one of the premier players in the conference; and a driving force behind Georgian’s return to the postseason.
