Three members of Georgian's Men's Golf team are participating in this week's Investor's Group Ontario Men's Amateur Championship at Thornhill Golf Club.
The field of over 150 features Ontario's best amateur players, and the Championship has a history of producing some of Canada's elite talent. Past winners include: 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir (1990 & 1992), professional players Jon Mills (2001), Corey Conners (2010), Albin Choi (2012), Chris Hemmerich (2014) and Gary Cowan, who holds the record for the most Ontario Amateur Championships with nine (1964, 1968, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1981 & 1984).
Leading the charge in yesterday's first round was CCAA National Bronze Medalist Matt Lemay, shooting a two-over seventy-three that saw him tied for twenty-second at days end. Daniel Knapp, heading into his third year with the program, shot an eight-over seventy-nine and is tied for eighty-seventh. Rounding out Georgian's contingency was Tyler Hale, who will look to bounce back after a tough opening round.
With two months until the OCAA season kicks off the Grizzlies are looking to build on an impressive 2015 season. The blue and white grabbed a total of five national and provincial medals, along with sixteen podium finishes. LeMay and Emilie Tyndall, a CCAA All-Canadian and All-Ontario team member, will return and lead the way for their respective teams.
This is the fourth time Thornhill has hosted the Ontario Men's Amateur Championship.
